Gratitude list of 2009

Today is the last day of the most formative year of my life – 2009.
I have been blessed with so many lessons, life changing situations, moments of success, days filled with unknowns, tears of joy and tears of sorrow, I have felt the human warmth and real appreciation as well as have witnessed cowardice and mediocrity driven by fear of those who ain’t aware of their life’s purpose.
I am so grateful for all of that and also for:
- Discovering TED.com videos and @Google Talks series on Youtube – what was never ending source of learning and “meeting” thought leaders from the seat of my room. So, excuse of most of the people in Slovakia: ” I don’t have money to attend any of these conferences”, is pretty lame, as one can “be present” on all of these events at any point of time via online posted videos and speeches. Thank You, buddies speakers!
- Experiencing the talent for composing sincere authentic emails, which I have been gifted with. I have realized its power in January 2009, when I have sent email with subject: “Unusual request for offline meeting” to a top executive of 10,000plus employess bank expressing my gratitude for being able to be an external consultant in “his” bank, signed as Ivana searching for authenticity and leadership and he replied to my email in few minutes with one line: Ivana, meet me tomorrow morning in my office! Yeah, well composed genuine email got me one on one 45 minutes, Q&A meeting with person, who was not available for meeting to the CEO of the consulting company I worked for. Grateful for giving me the chance, Mr.Marc Lauwers thanks to you I have got confirmed that being authentic is what counts and can open any door for you!
- I want to give a bow to all authors of the books I have been able to read this year. As I have been thrilled walking in shopping malls and buying shoes 2 years ago, I have felt this way when entering a bookshop and I trust it will never change. One book every week is the greatest food for soul and I promise I will carry on in this pace in 2010, as well.
- “Meeting” with GaryVee one early june morning. After I have seen keynote speech of GaryVaynerchuck. during work day in the office I have screamed in my mind “eureka” I am not alone and I am not insane as most of the people around me claimed me to be, when they have seen me blogging, tweeting and yammer-ing all days long. THANK YOU that YOU ARE, GaryVee!
- I am grateful for meeting super cool people via Yammer in Capgemini Global network, which we called Yammerland;-) I love you guys, you were really great to interact with and I have learned a lot from you. I miss all of YOU!
- Quitting my job, having the courage and faith to do so in the middle of recession was as Hugh MacLeod would say my #Evil Plan;-) I have sealed my last day at work by leaving a live message on Youtube for all the people, as I still and will care about them. My premiere video speech has been watched over 1000 times and I thank you all, who has dedicated their time to my 5 minutes long gift.
- Being able to spend time at my hometown with parents. After being voluntarily unemployed and setting up “office” in my childhood room, I have had the best people on Earth around me, my Mum and Dad. I could not do that if I would be still working 9 to 5 in the capital city. I love you, big time and thank you for all the trust and support you gave me, even tough sometimes you must have been really worried about me.
- In November my dream came true and it has 4 letters : N G L S . Three strangers from Seattle believed in me and came to Slovakia, because as Ron Carucci said: “I have asked them to do so.” And no one else have in the planet have asked them. Guys, dreams can come true, you can get standing ovations and see people crying from joy, just follow your heart. Those moments will remain with me forever. Thank YOU, A3 (=awesome threesome) from Seattle and NGLS-ers.
- Thank you my virtual friends who have connected with me via social media this year. Conversations with you, replies to my emails, tweets, FB messages, even tough I was complete stranger for you at that moment means so much for me… THANK YOU my friends!
2009 was the most exciting, adventurous, fulfilling year of my life. What about you? What are you grateful for? Share it with us, here.

Rules are useless if you do not take action

At the end of NGLS workshop, three randomly picked participants have been interviewed. My first question was for Peter Hegedúš and I have asked him, following question:
What new did you learn during NGLS workshop?
I was astonished by Peter’s reply!
Video is in Slovak, so I will translate it into English:
I have been taught that leadership has set rules which one who wants to be leader need to follow. But I have realized it is not truth. Rules are useless, if you are not taking action. I should take action, and by it the rules will be set and I will become leader. Then I can lead the change or any activity which is meaningful and I see purpose in it.

Pravidlá sú na nič pokiaľ človek nezačne niečo robiť
Na záver NGLS workshopu, sme urobili interview s tromi náhodne vybratými účastníkmi. Prvá otázka smerovala na Petra Hegedúša. Moja otázka znela:
Čo nového ste sa počas NGLS workshopu naučili?
Bola som očarená Petrovou odpoveďou.
Myslel som si, že leadership má určité pravidlá a bez toho nedokážem byť dobrým lídrom. Ale som zistil, že to vôbec nie je tak, lebo pravidlá sú na nič, pokiaľ človek nezačne niečo robiť. To znamená, že tým že začnem niečo konať, si vlastne vytvorím tie pravidlá, tým sa naučím byť lídrom a vlastne viesť tú zmenu alebo nejakú aktivitu v ktorej vidím zmysel.

Almost three weeks since 1st NGLS event has passed, I have decided to share with you very special moments.
Song Man in the mirror has powerful lyrics and this tune was my personal anthem for the whole time of NGLS lonely preparation.
After keynote speech , I have just played the song and spontaneously did what I have done.
No money in the world, no paycheck would be able to express the value of sincere hugs, energy and spirit of the people. Slovakia has bright future with people like this.

Uplynuli takmer tri týždne od prvého NGLS podujatia a ja som sa rozhodla podeliť sa s vami o špeciálnu chvílu, ktorú som zažila. Pieseň Muž v zrkadle má veľmi “silný” myšlienky-provokujúci text a tento song bol mojou osobnou hymnou počas osamelého pripravovania NGLS.
Po záverečnej reči, som zahrala túto pesničku a spontánne som urobila čo som urobila.
Žiadne peniaze na svete, žiadna výplata by nevedela vyčísliť hodnotu úprimných objatí, tú energiu a krásu ľudskej duše. Slovensko má úžasnú budúcnosť s takýmito ľudmi.

In previous post, I was touched and moved by Adam Kurta and his act of sincerity and hope for change in Slovakia.
One week long hunger strike has ended today on 24th November at 6 PM. His thank you note and message for Slovak citizens has been again recorded and now is shared with you my dear readers.
Black ribbons were distributed to be worn as sign with disappointment and disgust with overall Slovak political culture. As Adam said:
Black ribbons, dark as arrogance of Slovak politicians towards their citizens.
Slovakia need more Adams like that. Let us join him.
You can meet Adam and company tomorrow 25th November at 6 PM in Bratislava in Europa Pub.
P.S.: No alcohol will be served.

V predchádzajúcom príspevku, som vyjadrila ako som bola dotknutá a pohnutá Adamom a jeho činom. Týždňovú hladovku, dnes 24. novembra Adam ukončil o 18. tej hodine. Jeho poďakovanie tým, čo ho prišli podporiť a odkaz spoluobčanom som opäť zaznamenala aby som mohla sprostredkovať tieto chvíle aj vám moji drahí čitatelia.
Pokračovaním Adamových aktivít je distribúcia čiernych stužiek na znak nesúhlasu so súčasnou politickou kultúrou na Slovensku.
Ako povedal Adam:
Stuhy čierne ako čierne svedomie politikov…
Slovensko potrebuje viacej Adamov. Pridajte sa. Už zajtra, 25. novembra o 18.00 hod sa môžete stretnúť s Adamom v Bratislave v Europa Pub-e na Obchodnej ulici.

Yesterday, my friend who knows me via NGLS project alerted me via Facebook about 19 years old Slovak student, who is protesting with hunger strike in front of the House of parliament since 17th November 2009. In few hours we have met this bold young man and talked to him and his father who brought him hot tea for 2 hours.
Adam Kurta, student with passion and clean heart showed to all of us, who are pretending not to see the reality of Slovakia and its arrogant political representatives. Adam is collecting signatures to cancel immunity of Slovak politicians towards law and their compulsory presence at the Parliament meetings, as this is their job and their responsibility towards us, citizens. Watch Adam on video (in Slovak) and his striking quote:

Včera ma môj dobrý priateľ upozornil cez Facebook na 19 ročného študenta, ktorý už šiesty deň drží hladovku vo svojom stane pre NR SR a zbiera podpisy na zrušenie poslaneckej imunity a povinnosť poslancov zúčastňovať sa na zasadnutiach NR SR.
O pár hodín sme už boli pri tomto statočnom úprimnom mladíkovi, ktorý sa svojim činom snaží poukázať na aroganciu slovenských politikov. Dvojhodinový rozhvor aj s Adamovým otcom bol veľmi ľudsky emotívny zážitok.
Najsilnejší bol Adamov výrok:
Niečo čo tu na Slovensku bolo, tu zomrelo…
