26 Super Cool Quotes from: “We Are All Weird” by Seth Godin

Hey SCG,

I know that I still owe you book reviews from summer 2011, but before I will get there -> let me highlight for you yet another master piece written by our beloved Seth Godin -> few days back he has published via The Domino Project his new book called We Are All Weird. I have read it cover to cover within a day -> that is why all Domino books were purposely made in such short manifesto like format, which will enable you to read them over few cups of coffee. So, let me shut up my odes for it and let’s get to the twenty six most memorable quotes from Seth’s new gift to the world.

The opportunity of our time is to support the weird, to sell to the weird and, if you wish to become weird.

*

The epic battle of our generation is between the status quo of mass and the never-ceasing tide of weird.

*

Everyone keeps publishing detailed maps so other explorers can go even faster.

*

Smart marketers are already supporting those that wish to choose.

*

The weird are now more important that the many, because weird are the many.

*

They are addicted to mass and there’s no mass available.

*

If you persist in trying to be all things to all people, you will fail.

*

If you cater to the normal, you will disappoint weird.

*

Instead of reaching 5 percent of the geeks in your segment, the combination of permission marketing and the connections of tribes might permit you to reach 20 percent.

*

Humanity and connection are trumping the desire for corporate scale.

*

Average is for marketers who don’t have enough information to be accurate.

*

Every company in the Fortune 500 uses similar HR policies. It feels good the be part of the herd.

*

The urgent uptake of mobile devices is further proof that individuals want to connect with their tribe (their FB, Twitter etc.)  far more than they want to interact with the more average (more normal) world.

*

Mobile rewards right here, right now, all about me thinking, which is anathema to the factory-based marketer in search of mass.

*

Those brave enough to seek weird will thrive.

*

The weird set an example for the rest of us. They raise the bar, they show us through their actions that in fact we are wired to do the new, not to comply with someone a thousand miles away.

*

The middle is the reason we started school in the first place: to populate our culture with normal.

*

The factory-for-the-production-of-normal works overtime to sanitize and corporatize and discipline our kids into normalcy.

*

We can’t mass produce students when we have to work with them one at a time or in like-minded groups.

*

The stories of so many outliers are remarkably familiar. They didn’t like conformity forced on them by school. Struggled. Suffered. Survived. And now they’re revered.

*

My proposed solution is simple: don’t waste a lot of time and money pushing kids into directions they don’t want to go. Instead, find out what weirdness they excel at and encourage them to do that. Then get out of the way.

SCG,

I was wondering if you could sum up few ‘features’ and ‘characteristics’, which make us – Super Cool Gang-ers weird? What make us out of normal? If you are asked to describe someone a typical reader of this blog, how would you describe us? Why are we different? Are we?

😉

Over to you, weirdos!!

😉

P.S.: Don’t forget to pick up your copy of  We Are All Weird as there are only 11 thousand paperbacks and there will be no more, so hurry. Please sneeze and tweet about it with hashtag #weirdDomino

I wonder how many conservative parents are blogging these days…

  2. As Seth mentioned in his blog post last week -“Go ahead and invent your own cover if you like. Weird is everywhere you look, even the mirror.” So I thought I’d make it easy for any weirdoes like me to do so. You can create your own book cover at http://www.customweareallweird.com.

    Enjoy!

  3. > “Average is for marketers who don’t have enough information to be accurate.”
    That cracks me up.
