I am glad you got inspired;-) Exam is kind of intellectual thriller, not scary at all, whole movie is done in an exam room, with very interesting ending. Worth-watch, especially to examine human behaviors & individual characters, which will show, what truly matters at the end.

Dead Poets Society and American History X are definitely on my list of favorites. Invictus I still need to see. As mentioned above by Tony, The Pursuit of Happyness is definitely worth adding. Also: have you seen Hable con ella (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0287467/) from Pedro Almodovar? Another one I like to recommend is the oldie Do the right thing (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0097216/) from Spike Lee. And of course The Big Lebowski (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118715/).
